Overview

If you are stepping into the world of high-altitude mountaineering, then the Kyajo Ri expedition will be an ideal choice to begin. This mountain will teach you serious ice and rock climbing, make you mountain smart, and sharpen your climbing skills.

Kyajo Ri is a 6,186 meters mountain located in the heart of the Khumbu region. It is a trekking peak but technically more advanced than the famous Mera Peak and Island Peak.

You do not need prior climbing experience for Kyajo Ri climbing, but trekking experience, strong fitness, mental resilience, and ambition are required.

The Kyajo Ri expedition is a 15 days trip. The journey begins in Kathmandu, the City of Temples. Here, you will have a full day to explore a few tourist sites and shop for the expedition.

Then, you will fly to Lukla airport from where you begin walking. Trekking through the legendary Everest Base Camp trail, you will reach Namche Bazaar. On the way, spend a night in Phakding village.

The trail goes through rhododendron forests and crosses numerous suspension bridges. In Namche Bazaar, you will take an acclimatization break and hike to Hotel Everest View.

From here, leave the main EBC trail and ascend to Thame Valley. Trekking through the peaceful Thame village, ascend to Mende and continue towards Kyajo Ri Base Camp.

You will spend two nights at the base camp and ascend to Camp I. If needed we spend a night at Camp I or directly ascend to Camp II the same day. We wait for the summit window and push to Kyajo Ri summit.

From the Kyajo Ri Base Camp, we plan to reach the summit and return to base camp in four days. Our Kyajo Ri expedition itinerary also has a contingency day, in case we see a setback due to weather changes or other unseen circumstances.

After climbing the peak, you will return to Lukla following the same route and fly to Kathmandu. On the last day, our team will drop you off at the airport, and this concludes the Kyajo Ri expedition.

What to expect during the Kyajo Ri expedition 15 days?

The Kyajo Ri expedition 15 days is an adventurous and challenging trip. You will explore rich Nepalese heritage and experience heart-warming Nepalese hospitality. During trekking, Sherpa and other communities will enrich your time in the mountains.

You will have memorable encounters with the locals and fellow trekkers and climbers. As the trail unfolds, you will see beautiful landscapes and breathtaking mountain vistas. Every day, you will gain elevation. It brings a different climate each day.

Adjusting to changing elevation and environment is necessary. Likewise, walking 5 to 6 hours a day is also challenging. The challenges are high, but the rewards are higher.

Imagine witnessing some of the highest mountains in the world, such as Everest, Lhotse, Cho Oyu, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Pumori, Cholatse, etc.

Once you are at the Kyajo Ri Base Camp, we begin preparing for the summit push. Your team leader will provide pre-climbing training and gear you up for the final push.

And the moment you reach the top of Kyajo Ri, everything makes sense. All of your hard work will pay off, and then you will start your return journey to Kathmandu.

Kyajo Ri climbing difficulty

Kyajo Ri is a technical mountain. It involves rock and ice climbing. The route is steep and has an incline of around 50 to 55 degrees.

Climbers planning to summit Kyajo Ri must have previous high-altitude trekking experience and knowledge of rock and ice climbing.

You will walk around 5 to 6 hours a day, depending on your pace. Summit day will be longer. In short, to climb Kyajo Ri, you have to be physically and mentally fit.

Physical fitness for Kyajo Ri Peak climbing

You do not have to be a mountaineer or an athlete to climb Kyajo Ri Peak. But you do need to be genuinely fit. On this 15 days trip, you will be challenged beyond your limits.

There will be long hours of walking, high altitude gain, rugged terrain, and technical challenges, which require good stamina, strength, and endurance.

Pre-climbing training:

You have to begin your preparation 3 to 6 months before your expedition date. It will give your body and mind enough time to get strong and ready for the journey.

  • Cardio: You need a solid base, and cardio will help you achieve it. Regular trail running, cycling, swimming, or hiking is highly recommended. Increase the duration and intensity gradually.
  • Strength training: Focus on your legs, core, and upper body. Follow a workout plan that will help you build the legs and core to climb a mountain.
  • High elevation experience: For high altitude experience, you have to do day hikes and short treks. If you have never trekked before, you cannot climb Kyajo Ri or any peak in Nepal. So, start with trekking.
  • Flexibility and recovery: Stretching is the foundation. Likewise, combine regular yoga or pilates in your routine. These are great for flexibility and balance. With training, also prioritize your rest for quick recovery.
  • Mental Preparation: Mental resilience is the key to climbing any mountain in the Himalayas successfully. The more you push your body during training, the more you mentally become stronger.

Essential Information

High altitude management

Our Kyajo Ri expedition itinerary includes an acclimatization day in Namche Bazaar and at Kyajo Ri Base Camp. We also have a contingency day planned in the itinerary that we use if we need more time to rest before the summit push.

We ascend slowly. Likewise, after base camp, we make 1-2 high camps as per the climbers' fitness. Our guides will monitor your health and provide first aid if signs of altitude sickness show.

Follow the preventive measures below to avoid altitude sickness:

  • Ascend slowly
  • Maintain your pace
  • Keep yourself hydrated
  • Listen to your body
  • Take frequent short breaks to rest
  • Get ample sleep
  • Eat carbohydrate-rich food
  • Be aware of early signs of altitude sickness, such as headache, insomnia, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, difficulty in breathing, and loss of appetite.

Best time for the Kyajo Ri expedition

The Kyajo Ri climbing season is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Winter is also a great time for climbing this peak, but you have to be well-prepared for the cold weather.

Spring and autumn are the peak climbing seasons in the Himalayas. Excellent visibility, stunning mountain vistas, sturdy climbing routes, and low risk of avalanches make these two seasons ideal for mountaineering.

Accommodation

During the Kyajo Ri expedition, you will spend nights at a mix of comfort and basic accommodation. In Kathmandu, you will stay at a 3-star hotel with all standard amenities.

While trekking through the lush valleys of the Khumbu region, you will spend nights in Sherpa villages along the way. The accommodation will be basic but cozy lodges. You can expect clean, twin-shared rooms, warm blankets, common washrooms, and bustling dining.

At the Kyajo Ri Base Camp and higher camps, you will be living in alpine tents. These tents are sturdy, insulated, and set up by our support crew. Every climber gets a separate sleeping tent and shared dining and washroom tents.

Food

In Kathmandu, you get breakfast in the package. Buy lunch and dinner yourself.

During trekking, you will have meals in lodges. Meals will be fresh and warm. Some common dishes are dal bhat, thukpa, noodles, momo, stew, porridge, fried rice, etc.

While climbing, our cook and kitchen team will take care of the meals. We will provide hearty, high-calorie meals designed to keep your energy levels up in the harsh conditions.

Clean drinking water will be available throughout the trip. You can pack personal snacks, bars, and chocolates for the journey.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is a must for Kyajo Ri expedition. The weather in the Himalayas is unpredictable, and climbing a mountain includes underlying risks that are beyond our control. By having the right travel insurance coverage, you will have freedom to travel freely.

Your insurance plan for Kyajo Ri climbing must include high altitude trekking and climbing coverage up to 6,200 meters, emergency helicopter evacuation, and medical bills.

Communication during the trip

Compared to other trekking regions, Everest has better network coverage. You can use mobile data (buy a Nepali tourist sim in Kathmandu) or even get WiFi in lodges to stay connected with your friends and family.

After Mande village, there is no network. We use a satellite phone to stay connected with the management team in Kathmandu. Likewise, walkie-talkies are used for communication between base camp and higher camps.

*Satellite calls are expensive. Likewise, Lodge charges a few extra bucks for WiFi. Carry some money for personal use.

Other services

  • Charging: Carry a solar charger and spare batteries for backup. You can charge your mobile and camera in the teahouses during trekking. It will cost you a few extra bucks.
  • Hot showers: It is also a paid service in teahouses. You can expect to pay NRP 500 to NRP 700 per shower. Pack wet tissues for backup. Note that taking regular showers in the Himalayas is not recommended. It can lead to hyperthermia.
  • ATM: There is ATM in Lukla and Namche Bazaar. Withdraw ample money to use during the rest of the trip. You will need money for personal expenses such as charging, hot shower, WiFi, satellite calls, etc.
  • Tips: You are supposed to tip your guide and porters after the trip. 25% to 35% of the package cost is recommended. You can tip more if your heart desires.

Nepal travel visa fee

A Nepal travel visa is easily available at Tribhuvan International Airport for travelers from many countries. This is called an on-arrival travel visa. Check your country's eligibility on the official site of Nepal immigration.

To expedite the visa processing, fill out the form online and keep the necessary documents and visa in USD on hand. You can also obtain the travel visa from the Nepalese Embassy in your country before arriving in Kathmandu.
