Altitude sickness during the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek

On the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek, you will travel across varying elevations and reach up to 5,140 meters (16.863 ft) above sea level. Traveling above 2,500 meters involves the risk of altitude sickness.

The higher you ascend from this elevation, the lower the oxygen level will get. If you are not used to low oxygen levels, your body will show discomfort, which we call altitude sickness.

To mitigate it, we include acclimatization days in our Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek itinerary and also follow altitude sickness preventive measures.

  • Symptoms: Nausea, dizziness, headache, difficulty in breathing, trouble in sleeping, and loss of appetite.

Preventive measures:

  • Drink at least 2 liters of water daily

  • Limit caffeine intake
  • Ascend slowly and maintain an informal pace
  • Listen to your body
  • Take short breaks to catch deep breaths

  • Eat carbohydrate-rich food while trekking

Travel insurance for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek

Travel insurance is a must for restricted area treks like Kanchenjunga North Base Camp. It must include emergency helicopter evacuation. Trekkers have to give us their travel insurance documents before the trek starts.

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek permit

The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp is one of the remotest parts of the Himalayas in Nepal and is located close to the Nepal-China border. So, foreigners have to obtain a special permit and follow a couple of strict rules to do this trek.

You will need the following permits for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek:

  1. Kanchenjunga Restricted Area Permit
  2. Kanchejunga Conservation Area Permit

Likewise, these are the rules that every trekker must follow to do the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek:

  1. Must trek with an authorized Nepali trekking company like us
  2. Must trek with a licensed guide
  3. Must trek in a group of at least two trekkers (your guide and porter don't count in it)

Accommodation during the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek

The Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek route has simple tea house accommodation available for the trekkers. Unlike the famous trekking routes in Nepal, the Kanchenjunga trail has authentic teahouses runned by local families.

  • Rooms: Rooms are given on a twin-shared basis. So, there will be two beds in most rooms. Rooms are small and simple. You will experience a raw mountain lifestyle. Services are better in Sekathum and Ghunsa villages compared to Kambachen and Lhonak.
  • Single rooms: Single rooms are very rare and cost extra money.
  • Toilets: Toilets are usually Indian-style. Some places may have Western-style toilets. Bathrooms are usually made outside and are shared between the trekkers.
  • Hot shower: A hot shower is a privilege during the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek. You have to pay a few extra bucks. Once you ascend above 2,500 meters, we do not recommend showing because of the cold weather. Wet wipes are best to keep yourself refreshed during the trek.
  • Charging: Teahouses offer a charging service at a small cost. For backup, carry a solar power bank and spare batteries.

*Our Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek package cost does not include personal expenses such as WiFi fee, charging fee, and hot showers during the trek.

Food during the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek

Food options are quite limited on the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek route compared to the famous trekking routes in Nepal.

Dal bhat will be our staple meal during the trek. It consists of steamed rice, lentil soup, veggies, and some additions like pickles, curd, and papadam.

Some other common dishes found along the trail are Tibetan bread, porridge, stew, fried rice, soups, noodles, pasta, momo, boiled potatoes, etc.

Simillary, tea and coffee will be available everywhere. Local wines and alcohol are also found in all places, but we do not recommend having them because of altitude sickness.

Another thing trekkers have to be cautious of is eating meat dishes. We recommend not having meat at higher altitudes because there is no good refrigeration system.

Boiled drinking water is available in teahouses. Carry water purification tablets for backup, as well as pack ample snacks for the journey.

Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek best season

Our favorite time for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek is the spring and autumn seasons. These seasons have perfect landscapes and crystal clear mountain vistas. The trail is in good condition, and the weather is stable.

Summer/monsoon (June to August) and winter (December to February) are off-seasons for the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp trek because of unfavorable weather conditions.

  • Spring (March to May): Flowers make the spring season very special in the Himalayas. The foothills are covered with many wild flowers, including the beautiful rhododendrons. Likewise, fresh snowfall in winter makes the mountains extremely captivating. The climate is neither too hot nor too cold.
  • Autumn (September to November): Autumn is famous for treks in Nepal. It is a great time to see mountain vistas. The muted fall scenery is also quite charming. Climate and weather are preferable, too. In short, you will have a great time trekking to the Kanchenjunga North Base Camp in Nepal.
