Overview

In the Annapurna region, there are many adventurous trekking routes, and the Mardi Himal trail is one of them. The Mardi Himal trek is known for its wilderness, offbeat terrain, and breathtaking mountain vistas. Cultural encounters are comparatively less on the Mardi Himal trek route, but trekkers get to enjoy nature and peace to the fullest.

The Mardi Himal trek is a great choice for trekkers who are looking for a quieter trek in the Annapurna region. This trek is widely famous among local tourists and is also visited by a good number of foreigners every year.

In the peak trekking seasons (spring and autumn), when famous treks like Annapurna Base Camp and Ghorepani Poon Hill are busy with trekkers from all around the world, the Mardi Himal trail offers an excellent, less crowded alternative.

The mountain views during the Mardi Himal trek are also incredible. You will see some of the finest views of mountains, such as Annapurna, Machhapuchhare (Fishtail), Hiunchuli, Nilgiri, Mardi Himal, Dhaulagiri, etc.

*The Mardi Himal trek and Mardi Himal Base Camp trek are the same.

Given the moderate difficulty level of the Mardi Himal trek, trekkers of all ages can do it. The terrain is offbeat but not technical or extremely challenging. With the guidance of our mountain leaders, you can complete the Mardi Himal trek 9 days without a scratch.

We love the good pace of the Mardi Himal trek route. The trail gradually ascends through several camps and takes you to Mardi Himal Base Camp. Mardi Himal Base Camp is the highest point of this trek.

You will be trekking through forested hills that get dense and damp as you ascend higher. The night stops along the Mardi Himal trail are basically camps that were established when the Mardi Himal trek route was first introduced.

Every camp has teahouses where trekkers spend the night. In 3 to 4 days of hiking, you will ascend above treeline and follow a narrow ridge that leads to the Mardi Himal Base Camp.

The slow increase in elevation allows trekkers to acclimatize and avoid altitude sickness. While returning from the base camp, you will follow the same trail till Low Camp and descend to Sidding village following a separate route.

Overall, Mardi Himal trek 9 days is an adventurous venture in the Annapurna region. It is ideal for both beginner and experienced backpackers. The journey is outstanding and will satisfy your mountain cravings to the fullest.

Essential Information

Mardi Himal trek difficulty

The Mardi Himal trek is moderately challenging. It means this trek is suitable for beginner trekkers with decent fitness. The trail includes steep ascents, narrow ridges, and rocky terrain, which make Mardi Himal an offbeat trek but not super challenging.

Trekkers can expect six hours of hiking each day. The Mardi Himal trek route does not have many services. So, trekkers have to adjust to limited facilities, simple accommodation, and shared washrooms.

  • Difficulty: Moderately challenging but manageable if you prepare
  • Hiking duration each day: 5 to 6 hours a day
  • Terrain: Steep, rugged terrain with narrow ridges
  • Altitude: The trek begins from Kande (1,770 meters) and ascends to 4,500 meters (Mardi Himal Base Camp).
  • Climate: Climate changes with the change in elevation. The higher you ascend, the colder the climate will get.
  • Services: Bare minimum services, and booking accommodation in advance is necessary in the peak trekking seasons.

Altitude sickness during the Mardi Himal trek

The highest altitude you reach during the Mardi Himal trek is 4,500 meters. Although it is not as high as other popular treks in Nepal, you will still travel above 2,500 meters. So, the risk of altitude sickness remains.

With that being said, the Mardi Himal trek is also a short trek. You will only spend around five days in the mountains. You will hike to 4,500 meters and return to Pokhara literally in the blink of an eye.

So, if you follow the preventive measures mentioned below, you are most likely to complete this trek without altitude sickness:

  • Be aware of the symptoms of altitude sickness. They are headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, loss of appetite, insomnia, and breathlessness. If you see these symptoms or feel uneasy, address them on time to avoid altitude sickness.
  • Maintain a steady pace and do not rush.
  • Keep yourself hydrated. Drink at least 2 liters of water daily.
  • Avoid alcoholic drinks and smoking while ascending. Likewise, have caffeine (tea/coffee) in moderation.
  • Get proper sleep and have carbohydrate-rich meals daily to have enough energy to walk six hours a day.

Travel insurance for the Mardi Himal trek

We recommend trekkers buy travel insurance for the Mardi Himal trek just in case they get hurt or extremely sick during the trek and require helicopter evacuation. Without travel insurance coverage, a helicopter evacuation can be delayed. So, it is best that you get the coverage.

Mardi Himal trek permit

You will need two permits for the Mardi Himal trek, and they are:

  • TIMS Card
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit

The best time or season for the Mardi Himal trek is spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). Stable weather and moderate climate in these months make trekking enjoyable.

On the other hand, the weather and climate are not favorable in summer/monsoon (June to August) and winter (December to February). The trail condition is not good either.

Spring (March to May):

Spring is one of the best times for the Mardi Himal trek. The trail is covered with rhododendron blooms, and the mountain views are also crystal clear.

Autumn (September to November):

In addition to that, autumn is a festival period. So, you will have a great insight into Nepali culture and traditions.

Summer/monsoon (June to August):

Summer and monsoon overlap each other. The lower part of the trail is very hot. As you ascend, the temperature drops, but unpredictable weather makes trekking in this season challenging.

Once rainfall begins, the trail becomes muddy and slippery. Landslide risk increases all over the trail, and the views are also not that great.

Winter (December to February):

Winter is also considered off-season for the Mardi Himal trek due to adverse weather and harsh cold climate. But it is a great time for trekkers looking for a peaceful trail and who love winter landscapes.

Snow begins to fall around late December and January, making the trail even more enchanting. On sunny days, the mountain views are great, but there are also gloomy days.
