Overview

If you are a complete beginner in the climbing world and looking for a mountain to begin your mountaineering journey, Lobuche Peak Climbing will be the perfect choice for you. Lobuche Peak is located in the eastern Himalayan range in Nepal (near Mt. Everest). It is a trekking peak, so the technical challenges are less. Although the ascent is quite simple, the climbers get to experience incredible mountaineering.

Lobuche Peak is among the top 5 trekking peaks in Nepal. It is located in the Sagarmatha National Park near Mount Everest. There are two summits of Lobuche Peak- Lobuche East (6,145 m) and Lobuche West (6,119 m).

You will climb the Lobuche East summit during the Lobuche Peak Climbing. The Lobuch West summit route is technically challenging and requires an expedition-style approach.

While climbing the Lobuche East Peak, you will follow the southeast ridge.   Laurence Nielson and Ang Gyalzen Sherpa successfully climbed Lobuche East on 25 April 1984 following this route.

The southeast ridge is the extension of the Khumbu Glacier. Before reaching the southeast ridge, you will climb a series of ice/snow-covered slabs using fixed ropes and other climbing gear.

60 m from the central ridge, the slab end, and you come across a 50-degree snow wall that ascends onto the ridge at 5,700 meters. Our Lobuch East High Camp will be at 5,400 meters.

You can make a second high camp at 5,700 meters, but most climbers do not need it. The climbing route further ascends following the summit ridge around seracs and various "lumps and bumps".

Some part of the Lobuche Peak Climbing route is quite exposed, which makes climbing considerably challenging and daring. Note that just before reaching the true summit of Lobuche East Peak, you will come across the false summit.

Is the Lobuche Peak Climbing 16 days suitable for you?

The Lobuche Peak Climbing 16 days is not an easy activity. It combines trekking to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar with climbing the Lobuche East summit. The journey is physically and mentally very demanding.

Participants have to be in great shape to do Lobuche Peak Climbing. You will experience camping at 5,400 meters (Lobuche Peak High Camp) and climb on exposed ridges to reach the summit.

Although Lobuche East is a trekking peak, you will ascend to 6,145 meters above sea level. At this altitude, you have to deal with harsh cold, strong wind, and intense sun rays. There is a high chance of sunburns, and even slight carelessness can lead to frostbite.

There is an adventure and excitement part to the Lobuche Peak Climbing. At the same time, climbers also need to be serious and follow our guidelines. In short, Lobuche Peak Climbing is a big commitment and is only recommended to very experienced trekkers.

Who can join the Lobuche Peak Climbing?

Experienced trekkers who have already done the Everest Three Passes trek, Annapurna Circuit trek, and Manaslu Circuit trek & are looking for the next big adventure in the Himalayas.

Aspiring climbers who wish to begin mountaineering in the Himalayas and are looking for their first ascent.

Anyone with the required fitness and high altitude experience who wishes to try peak climbing in Nepal.

The Lobuche Peak Climbing is also great for climbers who are looking for a practice peak for acclimatization and technical skill training.

How to deal with exhaustion, high altitude, and cold during the Lobuche Peak?

Climbing Lobuch Pak is physically and mentally very challenging. It involves a lot of physical and mental endurance. The harsh alpine environment and low oxygen levels will push you beyond your limits.

Hiking 6 hours daily to reach Everest Base Camp is challenging and quite exhausting, too. Your body experiences a depletion of oxygen every day. Likewise, the temperature drops the higher you ascend.

While climbing Lobuche Peak, you have to wear a proper down suit graded for 6,000 meter + altitude to protect yourself from hyperthermia and frostbite. Climbing wearing a heavy down suit and a rucksack with essentials is very challenging. It tests your strength.

You cannot avoid exhaustion during the Lobuche Peak Climbing 16 days, but it can be managed. Ascend slowly. You are not competing with anyone here. Take frequent breaks to catch deep breaths, and layer the clothes properly to maintain insulation under your summit suit.

What to expect during the Lobuche Peak Climbing with EBC hike?

Our Lobuche Peak Climbing itinerary includes a hike to Everest Base Camp and Kala Patthar. You will hike to these destinations before climbing Lobuche Peak. It is great for acclimatization.

The hike to EBC goes through beautiful Sherpa villages and rhododendron and pine-covered hills. On the way, you will explore ancient monasteries and enjoy the warm hospitality of the Sherpa and other mountain communities.

The journey begins in Kathmandu. From here, you will fly to Lukla. In eight days of trekking from Lukla, you will reach Everest Base Camp. After the Kala Patthar hike, you will descend to Lobuche village and begin the climbing phase.

Above Lobuche village, you will spend a night at Lobuche High Camp at 5,400 meters. From the high camp, we push for Lobuch East Peak. At high camp, your team leader will provide pre-climbing training.

Throughout the trip, you will see some of the most insane mountain vistas. You will see many Himalayan mountains such as Ama Dablam, Thamserku, Lhotse, Nuptse, Makalu, Kanchenjunga, Cho Oyu, Everest, Pumori, Chamlang, etc.

How to prepare for Lobuche Peak Climbing?

  • Preparation duration: If climbing Lobuche Peak is your goal, then assess your fitness and past high altitude experience, and make a workout/preparation plan as per that. For beginner climbers with 2/3 previous trek experiences, we recommend 2 to 4 months of preparation. Give yourself ample time to prepare for Lobuche Peak Climbing and do not rush yourself.
  • Exercise: Strength training combined with intense cardiovascular exercises is recommended at least 4 times a week. You have to improve your strength, stamina, and endurance to climb a peak in the Himalayas.
  • Long walk: At least once a week, go for a long walk (5 to 6 hours). It will be best if you walk with a 5 kg backpack on you.
  • Day hiking and short treks: Before the Lobuche Peak Climbing journey begins, go on a handful of day hikes on weekends. If possible, do some short treks too. These are great for high-altitude walking practice.

Essential Information

Lobuche Peak Climbing difficulty

On the Lobuche Peak Climbing, you will traverse mixed terrain. It is a high-altitude journey that combines trekking and climbing. First, you will hike to Everest Base Camp. It will be a doable hike, but long walking and high altitude can exhaust you.

After the EBC hike, you will begin climbing to the Lobuche East Peak summit. The climbing route is not that technical, so beginner climbers can climb Lobuche Peak. However, the physical and mental demands are very high.

As per the Himalayan mountaineering standards, Lobuche Peak's difficulty is marked Alpine PD+. It is not a technically advanced mountain, but the high altitude and extreme alpine environment demand strong fitness.

You do not need previous climbing experience to do Lobuche Peak Climbing, but you have to be mountain smart. On the other hand, prior trekking experience is a must.

Altitude sickness during the Lobuche Peak Climbing

The Lobuche Peak Climbing takes you 6,000 meters above sea level. It is not a common altitude for humans to be at. One can suffer from HACE or HAPE if not acclimatized properly, and it can be fatal if not addressed on time.

To reduce the risk of HACE and HAPE during climbing, we take two acclimatization breaks during trekking and also hike to Everest Base Camp and Kala Pattar.

How to avoid altitude sickness:

  • Be aware of the early signs of altitude sickness and get medicine on time
  • Ascend slowly and do not rush
  • Listen to your body and keep it hydrated
  • Avoid alcohol or smoking
  • Eat carbohydrate-rich food to maintain your energy and get ample sleep

Symptoms:

  • Headache
  • Breathlessness
  • Diziness
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Insomnia
