Overview

Yala Peak Climbing is one of the easiest trekking peaks in Nepal. It is graded as facile/easy on the alpine grade system. It means Yala Peak is a beginner-friendly peak with no technical challenges.

Unlike Island Peak and Mera Peak, Yala Peak is seldom climbed. So, the peak stays crowd-free even during the peak climbing seasons. Most of the time, climbers use Yala Peak to acclimatize and warm up before the Naya Kanga push.

If you are new to peak climbing, Yala Peak is perfect to learn proper technique with crampons, an ice axe, ascendnig/descending using fixed ropes, self-arrest, and performing crevasse rescue.

Although the technical challenges are low on Yala Peak, you will have full high-altitude climbing experience, including exposure to cold and sun and climbing on snow and icy paths.

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best times for Yala Peak Climbing. You can also climb this peak in the winter season if you are well prepared.

Yala Peak Climbing itinerary

The Yala Peak Climbing starts from Kathmandu. You will gear up in the city, get permits, and buy/rent climbing equipment. From Kathmandu, you will drive north to Syabrubesi, from where we begin walking.

The first few days, we’ll spend trekking through the Langtang National Park. The trail ascends and descends through dense forests of oak, rhododendron, bamboo, and pine, crossing the Langtang River many times on the way.

We take night breaks in Lama Hotel, Langtang village, and Kyanjin Gompa. While spending nights in these villages, you will get to see the daily lives of the locals and the rich cultural heritage of the Tamang people.

At Kyanjin Gompa, you will take an acclimatization break and hike to Kyanji Ri or Tserko Ri. Explore a local yak cheese factory and delicacies such as pure seabuckthorn juice.

From Kyanjin Gompa, you will ascend to Yala Peak Base Camp. Our support crew handles setting up tents and cooking meals at the base camp. You will leave the base camp at around 3:00 AM to 4:00 AM.

Scramble over loose rocks and mixed snow slopes. We may use climbing gear like an ice axe, crampons, and ropes to cross steep, icy sections near the summit ridge.

Upon reaching the top of Yala Peak, we will be rewarded with a gorgeous sunrise and 360-degree views of towering peaks and glaciers. We will see Shishapangma (8,027) in its full glory, along with Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, and many others.

After enjoying the view, descend back to Yala Peak Base Camp. We’ll clean the base camp before returning to Kyanjin Gompa to spend the night. Then follow the same trail back to Lama Hotel and descend to Syabrubesi.

The Yala Peak Climbing ends in Syabrubesi. From here, you will drive back to Kathmandu. It will be a scenic ride like the last time. The evening is free in the city, and the next day you will fly back to your home.

Yala Peak summit route

You will scramble on a 25º slope, followed by 180 m of snow climbing on a 35º-40º slope and 650 m of climbing to the summit. The route is non-technical, and there are no hazards. Our team will fix ropes on any section that requires extra attention.
